To island scholars and island lovers around the world,
As a Korean island researcher and the proposer of the
20th Islands of the World Conference, it is with deep gratitude and heartfelt excitement that I extend this formal invitation to you.
The upcoming
20th Islands of the World Conference, hosted by the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA), will take place on
7-11 July, 2026, in
Shinan County, Jeollanam-do, Republic of Korea—a region often referred to as the “capital of islands,” with over 1,000 islands under its administration.
The main theme of the conference is
“Island Space and Time”. Through this lens, we will explore the dynamic realities of islands today and imagine sustainable futures, engaging in meaningful discussions and scholarly presentations that span diverse disciplines. The conference will encompass the following key sub-themes:
Governance, Policy Studies, and Politics
Economy, Population, Tourism, and Mobilities
Environment, Natural Sciences, and Biocultural Systems
Art, Culture, Heritage, Tradition, and History
Infrastructure and Technology
Theory, Epistemology, and Methodology
This conference is more than an academic gathering—it is an opportunity to foster solidarity and collaboration among island communities around the world. By sharing innovative policies and community-based development models, we aim to build resilient and inclusive island futures. It also offers a unique moment to introduce Korea’s 3,350 islands and their cultural richness to a global audience.
We sincerely look forward to welcoming you to Shinan, Korea, on 7-11 July, 2026. Let us come together to reflect on the future of islands and envision new paths forward.
Warm regards,
Sun-Kee Hong
