Concluding the 20th ISISA Islands of the World Conference
The 20th ISISA Islands of the World Conference has successfully drawn to a close amidst the great interest and support of many. Following an extensive preparation process since we won the bid in 2024, the conference was held from July 7 to 14, 2026, on Jaeundo Island in Shinan County and the surrounding Southwest Sea area under the theme "Island Space and Time." Thanks to the participation of approximately 400 researchers, policy experts, and representatives from universities and public institutions spanning 40 countries, the islands and seas of Shinan were able to serve as a deeply meaningful venue of exchange where global island scholars could meet.
Throughout the conference, a diverse array of programs was conducted, including 43 academic sessions, 4 keynote lectures, the presentation of 216 research papers, field excursions, international exchange programs, and promotional booths operated by 8 organizations. Most notably, the adoption of the "Shinan Island Declaration" for the peace and sustainable development of global islands, alongside our proposal to the UN to establish an "International Day of World Islands," stands as an invaluable achievement left behind by this conference. The Institution for Marine and Island Cultures (IMIC) at National Mokpo University co-hosted this conference alongside the International Small Islands Studies Association (ISISA) and Shinan County, overseeing the academic programming, international cooperation, and general event operations. While that process was by no means easy, the cooperation and encouragement we received from so many allowed us to elevate Shinan County and the islands of South Korea into an international academic platform where global island researchers and policy experts can engage in shared discussions.
During the academic conference, profound dialogues were facilitated around diverse themes centered on the humanities, social sciences, ecology, climate change, tourism, community, and policy of islands. It was also a deeply meaningful opportunity to share the achievements of the Humanities Korea Plus (HK+) ‘Island Humanities’ Project led by the Institution for Marine and Island Cultures, National Mokpo University, with scholars from around the world. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to all presenters, chairs, and discussants who lent their invaluable research and engaged in earnest debates to elevate the academic depth of this conference. Above all, this conference did not remain confined within the walls of a lecture hall but was a journey integrated with the living reality of the islands. Participants directly experienced the ecological and cultural value of Korean islands-exploring Shinan County’s tidal flats (a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site), biosphere reserves, and resident-participatory tourism policies. The post-conference excursion extended to climate crisis response sites, a banana smart farm, the Jeungdo’ salt pans, the history and maritime culture of Mokpo, and the beautiful gardens of Haenam alongside a temple stay at Mihwangsa, serving as a precious time to share the nature, culture, ecology, cuisine, and even a peaceful respite offered by the southwestern islands and seas.
Despite the challenges of the rainy season, the weather fortunately cleared to ensure that all itineraries were completed safely. Looking back, we faced numerous obstacles and trials leading up to the conference, but we were able to stand here today because of the helping hands offered at every critical juncture.
First, I extend my deepest gratitude to our international participants who traveled from afar to reach Shinan. Despite the logistical challenges of hosting a conference on islands with limited transportation, your understanding, patience, and enduring friendship shown until the very end were a constant source of strength. Your warm smiles and active engagement sustained us throughout the entire event. Additionally, I would like to express my profound gratitude to the ISISA Executive Committee and Officers who supported us wholeheartedly from bidding to preparing and hosting this conference. In particular, the trust and encouragement from President Laurie and President-elect Adam, along with the entire ISISA committee, served as our strongest pillar of support throughout the preparation process.
I also wish to extend special thanks to the officials of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Metropolitan City Government and Shinan County. Organizing an international academic conference on-site in an island region is an incredibly demanding feat. Thanks to the proactive cooperation and meticulous support of Shinan County, we successfully conveyed the beauty of Shinan’s islands, seas, tidal flats, culture, and the warm hospitality of its residents to the world.
My sincere thanks also go to the faculty and staff of National Mokpo University, the members of the Institution for Marine and Island Cultures, the Organizing Committee, the Academic Committee, session chairs and presenters, the Secretariat, our PCO, volunteers, and students. This conference would not have been possible without your quiet dedication, professionalism, and sense of responsibility behind the scenes. I also extend my gratitude to the Honam National Institute of Biological Resources, the Korea Island Development Institute (KIDI), the National Research Institute of Maritime Heritage, and the Korea Island Foundation for their generous support during the event.
The Next Generation Poster Session, which featured students from the School of Global Studies, National Mokpo University, alongside local high school students, was another deeply meaningful highlight of this conference. The experience of presenting research they prepared over the course of a year and engaging with global scholars stands as a stellar example of fostering local-based global talent, and we highly anticipate that this initiative will develop into a new model for future ISISA conferences.
Although the 20th ISISA Islands of the World Conference has come to an end, the academic dialogues, friendships, and spirit of cooperation forged in Shinan will continue to thrive. We hope this milestone will further elevate the international standing of Korean island research and establish Shinan County and the Southwest Sea region as crucial hubs for global island scholarship and policy discussions.
As the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee, the preparation process was an uphill battle. Yet, because of the support, dedication, and warmth shared by everyone involved, I found profound reward and happiness amidst the challenges. I will long and dearly cherish the connections, friendships, and shared moments we experienced on these islands.
Until we meet again next year in Curaçao, I wish you all abundant health and happiness.
With my deepest and most sincere gratitude,
The 20th ISISA Islands of the World Conference
Chairperson of the Organizing Committee
